Fishing is an art. You have to know how to do it, when to do it, and why you are doing it. Sure, you just might want to catch a few fish to feed your pride. But catching fish is something that has become more experimental than anything else. Why? Because there are so many ways to catch fish. But all of the proven ways to catch fish have one thing in common. They all involve using some kind of bait.

So as a novice fisherman or just someone who wants to brush up on his or her fishing skills, what kind of bait should you use? Here are a few kinds of bait that you can try out on your next fishing trips. Make sure to take down notes on which ones work best for you.

• Meat. Yes, it may sound silly but there are actually meat fishing products out in the market that you can use specifically to catch fish. If you ask any angler their opinion about using meat as bait, you will most probably come across a split decision. This is because many anglers do not really buy into the idea of meat fishing; but then there are also some who feel it is something that works all the time. The main strength of this kind of bait is that it can catch anything that swims. Using meat will most likely result in bigger catch.

• Worms. This is, of course, the epitome of all fishing bait. Earthworms have always been the favorite kind of bait. They are so popular because of the diversity of bait. Worms attract anything that swim, but not all fish will fall for a worm on a hook. Also, while whole worms may always seem to do the trick to get a fish on a hook, chopped worms will most likely do better. Your hook will swim better and you can ready your hook and experiment faster with chopped worms.

• Pellets. Perhaps one of the cheapest of baits, pellets are widely available but they can be difficult to use. You can find pellets in a variety of shapes and sizes. As a fisherman, you must know which pellets are best for certain kinds of fishes. This is where it can get really tricky and you might need to experiment a lot with pellet fishing. But if you really want to just go out there and catch something like carp, then you are better off with 4 mm pellets that work almost flawlessly. By hooking the pellets, the weight of your hook will help them sink through the water and fish will definitely find that very appetizing.

• Insects. Do you have the knack for catching little insects like grasshoppers or crickets? There are some fishes that will actually eat these insects so you can actually use them as a natural kind of bait. This is probably the cheapest bait ever since all you need to do is catch insects on your spare time. Of course, insects are not the most appetizing of meals even for a fish. Advice here is to just try it out once. You never know; it just might be the best bait choice for you.
