Four Common Types Of Fishing Rods

Traditionally people use bamboo to serve as a fishing rod but then again it has been modified to fit every modern fisherman's needs.

1. Ultra light rods. This type of fishing rod is rather short as compared to the rest. The average length is only between 4-5.5 feet. These rods are often used to catch small fish species. In addition, with ultra light rods you will be able to use lighter lines and smaller baits. From the term itself, it is pretty obvious that these rods are lighter and limber than your usual rods. These rods are capable of casting small baits or lures like wet flies and trout worms. Ultra light rods usually have test lines around 1-6 pounds.

2. Fly Rods. Before fiber glass and graphite were used to make fly rods, fishermen and fishing fans use bamboo instead. Although it is considered traditional, bamboo fly rods are brittle and can break easily, which is probably the reason why other materials are now used to manufacture this type of fishing rod.

Fly rods are usually long, thin and very flexible. Oftentimes an artificial fly is attached at the end of the fishing line. An artificial fly is a combination of a hook, feathers and foam or any lightweight material. The fishing line for fly rods is heavier than the standard fishing line. Fly rods come in different sizes and as to which type to use, it will depend on the weight of the line, the type of fish and of course the weather conditions. For example, if you want to catch a bigger fish, then you might want to use a heavier line, a bigger lure and of course, a bigger fly rod.

3. Spinning rods. For fishing amateurs, distinguishing a spinning rod and a spin casting rod can be difficult because both have spinning reels. Both may have spinning reels but the reels for spinning rods are mounted below it or underneath it. This is done so that the fishing line can be controlled better. This type of fishing rod has an average length of 5-8 feet or 1.5-2.6 meters.

In a spinning rod you will notice protrusions. These are called eyes in which the lines are being threaded. The eyes decrease in size when in it reaches the tip in order to reduce the friction when the fishing line is being spun. The handles for spinning rods are elongated to provide enough space for two hands casting especially when one is engaged in saltwater and salmon fishing. These rods are made from graphite or fiber glass.

4. Trolling Rods. These rods are often used by amateur fishermen or those who have gone fishing for the first time. Unlike the other types of rods wherein you need a great set of skill in order to be able to cast the bait at a considerable distance, trolling rods don't require such.

Trolling rods are often used when fishing is done on a moving boat. The fishing line is cast on the side of the moving boat and the motion of the boat then pulls the bait. Trolling rods are made of heavy duty materials and are a little stiffer so that a whipping, fast action can be achieved which is one requirement for this type of fishing. Trolling rods are often used to catch salmon or steelheads.
